The department of commerce was started in the academic year 1972 with the old PUC system. In the year 1976, B.COM degree courses were initiated. It was elevated to a Post Graduated Degree in the year 1980 onwards. It is started with a motive of providing quality education to the student of madras. The department was elevated to a research department to offer M.Phil. Degree course in the year 1993. Further the department was elevated to a full-fledged research department from the year 1993 offering full-time and part-time Ph.D. programme from the year 2004. Today the department of commerce boasts of 1050 students and 16 staff members. The core objective of the department is to provide quality- oriented and full-fledge knowledge to the student of commerce.
